Learn to decipher clues to unlock the meaning and significance of fashion in art. We will look at the reciprocal relationship between fine art and fashion and the role of clothing and adornment in identity construction, politics, and the economy. Beginning with an analysis of clothing and jewelry in ancient and early Renaissance periods, we will go on to consider symbolic sartorial choices in late Renaissance portraiture through an examination of symbolic gems, outrageous codpieces, and rich silks and brocades. The fashion of the royal court, including the dresses of Madame de Pompadour and Marie Antoinette will be discussed as well as the ensuing controversies. Our journey will continue to examine readytowear, the popularity of fashion houses and designers, and the rise of Paris as the fashion capital. Reflections of these changes can be found in the paintings of city life by the Impressionists and the portraits of John Singer Sargent. Fashion of the 20th and 21st centuries will be considered through analysis of specific designers and fashion houses, including Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Gucci, Rudi Gernreich, Versace, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen. The interplay of fashion and the body will be discussed through the photography of Richard Avedon, Herb Ritts, and Annie Leibovitz. The session will conclude with analysis of the role of fashion in contemporary visual and popular culture through such events as the Met Gala, Costume Institute exhibitions, and fashion weeks. On 10/25, Catharine Becket, Senior VP, Head of Magnificent Jewels at Sotheby's, will briefly share insider stories and a bit of history on some of the world’s most infamous jewelry collections.
