The Winter 2022 series will explore the diverse world of the handmade in modern and contemporary art. Historically undervalued in comparison to painting and sculpture, craft is largely marginalized for its utilitarian nature and oft communal creation. Its connection to women’s work further distanced it from the realm of fine art. However, recent exhibitions at museums like the Whitney, MoMA, and Crystal Bridges point to a reappraisal of craft. These shows emphasize how the handcrafted frequently has deeply provocative and timely themes that go beyond the decorative like social justice, domesticity, power, and identity, and oftentimes an artist’s choice to craft is a revolutionary act in and of itself. Showcasing the many facets of craft today, each session will consider a different medium, ranging from glass and ceramics to embroidery and weaving. Woodworking, metalsmithing, and papermaking will also be considered. From David Hammons’s delicate glass basketball hoops to Joyce J. Scott’s subversive beaded figures to Mulyana’s installations of crocheted sea creatures, striking pieces like these pull viewers in who stop to marvel at the craftsmanship. In doing so, the objects open a space to think critically about the issues found within. Additionally, we will examine the work of El Anatsui, Ruth Asawa, Dale Chihuly, Eva Hesse, Brian Jungen, Yayoi Kusama, Steven Young Lee, Simone Leigh, Jean Lowe, Liza Lou, Ernesto Neto, Pepón Osorio, Faith Ringgold, Miriam Schapiro, Lenore Tawney, and Lin Tianmiao. Taken together, these artists deftly apply traditional craft techniques to their artmaking practice in innovative ways that challenge the boundaries between art and craft.
