The spring session will serve as an exciting tour of museums both far and near as well as provide important insights that will illuminate future museum visits. As OCMA prepares to open its new facility in fall 2022, we will put the stateoftheart building in context through a presentation of museum history and its related debates, secrets, and controversies. We will begin with an analysis of early cabinets of curiosities, such as wunderkammern and studioli, which are often identified as the first examples of small, private museums. Next, we will consider the first public museums, such as the Louvre and the British Museum, against the backdrop of the Enlightenment and colonialism. We will then examine examples of looting and restitution, controversial curatorial and collecting practices, and questionable deaccessioning of museum objects. The final lectures will consider revolutionary museum architecture, modern and contemporary art museum priorities, and current movements to diversify and globalize the museum. The case studies will include a wide range of institutions, including local museums (LACMA, The Broad, Norton Simon Museum, The Getty), national museums (Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, The Neue Galerie, National Museum of African American History), and international museums (Tate Modern, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Pompidou Centre, The Quai Branly Museum, and Belgium's Africa Museum).
